LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Facilitator Training

The Serious Work Facilitation Training Course
The LEGO Group don't provide LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® training, instead they use SeriousWork to train their staff in the method.

LEGO Group officially
advise that you have two routes for attending LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® training: "trainers in the original method… and trainers of an expanded version of the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method”.
Certified LEGO SERIOUS PLAY Facilitator
Serious Work the new standard in LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitator training
Our training delivers the expansion the LEGO Group refer to and advances the traditional model of teaching LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® in the following ways:
  • Learn to facilitate, not participate
Serious Work training takes the opposite approach to the “master-learner” style of most trainers of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology.

Whilst the traditional model of training gives participants an excellent experience of what it is like to
be facilitated our masterclasses instead help you develop your facilitation skills with the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology.

This is the BIG difference between our course and others. The traditional 4 day training 'teaches LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®' we focus on
practicing facilitation using LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®.
  • Practice based
After demonstrations, participants in our training take turns to facilitate the group. This practice helps you develop your facilitation skills AND you learn from the experience of how others facilitate the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology.

Each sprint is linked to an important facilitator skill set. Uniquely, you also get to practice with a group you’ve never met. On the afternoon of day 2 we invite people new to the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method to an introductory workshop and you facilitate your first workshop. An excellent way to practice the facilitation skills you have been learning.
  • Small groups of 8 participants - maximum
In order to learn how to facilitate and have time for everyone in the group to practice new skills means we limit our courses to 8 people. Larger training workshops inevitably mean there is little time for everyone to have time to practice facilitation.
  • Focusing on the core LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® skills
Our training focuses on Level 1 “Individual Model Building” and Level 2 “Shared Model Building”. These are the foundation skills of the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® process.
    LEGO SERIOUS PLAY Build Levels
Some LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® training courses ask a group of about 12 trainees, who don’t know each other, to prepare a joint strategy during a 4-day training course. Inevitably this construct is unlike real world applications and in our experience it's hard to learn to facilitate Level 3 “System Building" in this way.

Our training gives you an experience of Level 3 “System Model Building”, but this skill is best learnt on live projects…
  • Learn advanced LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® skills on live projects
… our approach to helping you learn Build Level 3 “System Model Building” is to teach you on your live assignment, co-facilitating together with a experienced level 3 facilitator, who will teach you at the same time.

    Read more about
    advanced training.
    LEGO SERIOUS PLAY Build Levels
Learning Build Level 3 on live projects really is the best way to learn advanced LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitation skills.
  • Focused and intensive
We know that your time is valuable. Because we focus on the core LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® skills it means our standard training is two full days, 09.00-18:00.
  • A selective participatory leadership ethos
We aim to gather high quality groups of learners who share our ethos and who can bring additional value and insight to our masterclasses.

Before we confirm a participants place, we insist on a phone call or video conference. This is a chance for us to meet each other and explore if this course will meet your objectives and enable you to do what it is you hope to do.

You can question us on our approach and we seek to understand your motivation, ethos and fit with the group. By having this quality control, we ensure a better learning experience for all.

You won’t have to endure trying-to-learn with people who's experience, views and values don't fit the high quality, professional, peer-to-peer learning culture our training seeks to deliver.
  • Your Certification (very pretty it is too)
Serious Work masterclasses give you a certification for successfully facilitating Build Level 1 and Build Level 2. We think this is more valuable than the a 'certificate of completion' given on traditional training programmes, because you have practiced all the skills you'll need (rather than been facilitated).
    certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitator
A pathway to Certified Professional Facilitation

As professional facilitators we think certificates of competency as are the most valuable to you and your prospective clients.

We are International Association of Facilitators (IAF) Certified™ Professional Facilitators and we can mentor you through the process of becoming an IAF Certified™ Professional Facilitator.

IAF certification is impartial and after peer review of your skill, you can attain a higher level of facilitation certification.
  • Serious Work masterclasses are run by practitioners who occasionally teach
This gives you grounded real-world instruction with advice about how to successfully use the method in all kinds of different assignments, applications, group size and available time.

"The training exceeded my expectations. It is very engaging, high tempo, demanding and comprehensive. The participants went through a selection process to ensure they have strong facilitation skills so that we can dive into practice. I was amazed that we could learn the content, use it, become an expert only in 1.5 days and run a full session on building shared vision by the second half of the 2nd day!

Sean very generously provided an extensive course curriculum, variety of real life cases and most importantly his best practices. With this small group setting it felt more like a mentoring session focusing on improving our individual skillsets in a targeted way rather than a training.

I can already see the spectrum of use cases through the principles we learnt throughout the course. LEGO will enhance the effectiveness our trainings with its emphasis on kinaesthetic senses and playful elements."

"Sean was a Google discovery, literally. And we cannot be happier with the results! After a long online research, we realized that he had the perfect profile to facilitate two strategic planning sessions and to run a series LEGO Serious Play training workshops.

Regarding the training, the outcome was more than we expected. It was hands-on, and thoroughly enjoyable; Sean gave us examples that were relevant to our corporate mission. And most importantly, he not only demonstrated complete mastery in the use of the methodology, but also provided powerful insights beyond his book and material.

In addition to the training, Sean run two strategic planning workshops: i) with our management team and, ii) with our whole sector consisting of about 150 participants. He took the time to understand well our organization, its challenges during the merger of three units, and was fully committed to deliver an exceptional service. Sean is an engaging and effective communicator, who establishes a customer driven experience from the very beginning. Outstanding facilitator, always positive, and with a pleasant disposition. Thank you so very much Sean. It was a genuine pleasure to work with you!"

"I have had the pleasure of being instructed by Sean on two different LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® courses now and I have to say, both times I spent a fantastic couple of days learning and doing the practices with him and the other wonderful people who shared the training experience with me.

I am a huge fan of what and how Sean does what he does - I have learned SO much from him. He is the kind of mentor / teacher everyone wants and deserves; thoughtful, strong, hugely knowledgeable, empathetic and with a level of technical and interpersonal skill that I have rarely seen.

I feel very lucky indeed to have been able to share time with him and I look forward to continuing to build on our relationship in the future as a student, client and friend."

"If you are thinking about becoming a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitator like me, I recommend you consider a Serious Work Masterclass.

It was intense, fruitful, and carefully planned.

We learnt not only the a,b,c's of the methodology in half the typical time but had so many opportunities to practice it that I am confident I am ready to take on my own projects facilitating LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® levels 1 & 2 sessions without any further do.

Sean takes a special interest in making sure that you will find pairs in the class, thus it is also a great way to learn from peers and develop your network."
